Plans by Peel Environmental to develop a £65 million Renewable Energy Centre at the site of the former Houghton Main Colliery in Barnsley have been given the green light by Barnsley Council.

Members of the council’s Planning Board voted to approve the proposals, which will see a Timber Resource Recovery Centre (TRRC) built at the site on the A6195 Park Spring Road. The Houghton Main Renewable Energy Centre will use biomass to generate up to 20MW of energy for export.
